What to Buy for Business

What to Buy for Business

Rick Ono
Videoconferening: it's the technology of the future.
And it always will be.
It's an old joke but the issues are still the same. What questions should you ask before you commit to this technology

Conferencing technology

You want to be green but you don't want it to cost you the earth!

Do your really care enough about saving the planet to pay for conferencing technology?
Or is conferencing likely to be a pure commercial decision, based on time and money saving?
What are the current trends in collaboration?
Whatever happened to Groupware? Is social networking another flash in the pan?
Or does it have a more realistic chance of being adopted en masse?

What’s conferencing being used for?
Sharing documents? Live presentations? Aren’t there cheaper ways to do this?
If conferencing was so great, why do so many PR and sales and marketing representatives need to see you face to face, to tell you how great conferencing is?
Why do so few companies actually use their own technology convincingly?

Is it an effective tool? Or a needless expense?
Is the market changing, as conferencing becomes more affordable and plug and play?
How do you take the pain out of conferencing? (anyone got a list of ten things you can do to make conferencing effective?)
Are there companies that can manage this service for you?

What are the different types of service offered to SMEs?
What are the pros and cons?
How do you work out which is best suited to your company?

List the issues/hidden costs you must be aware of when buying:
Can you rank them in order of importance?

e.g Ease of use, Cost of installation/support/ownership
Rental and purchase costs
Hidden costs they never tell you about.
Standards problems and supplier lock ins
Compatibility and openness issues.

Are these new ‘affordable’ telepresence systems worth considering?

If you already have some kit, but want to upgrade, what questions do you need to ask?

Pros and Cons
